Celebrities Read Tweets About Themselves on Jimmy Kimmel Live

One of the greatest things about Twitter is that it connects celebrities to their fans directly without publicists or lame-stream media intermediaries.

This can be good, or bad in certain cases. Jimmy Kimmel chose to focus on the latter this week, because let’s face it, it’s a lot more entertaining.

In honor of Twitter’s sixth anniversary, Jimmy put together a video montage of a number of stars reading some actual Tweets they’ve received.

Watch below as Joel McHale, Jason Bateman, Louis CK, Kevin Nealon, Anna Faris, Will Ferrell, Kristen Bell, Will Arnett and others get personal:

The NFL combine is long gone, so it?s time for me to finally unveil my NFL Draft Big-Board. For those of you unfamiliar with the idea of a big-board, it is an ordered ranking of every player in the draft from the best, down to the players who?s playing days are now done.

You?ll notice that this is not the order that players will be drafted. Robert Griffin will go #2 in the draft, but he isn?t close to being the 2nd best player in the draft. He just barely made my top 10, and that was a very generous placement. Likewise, David Decastro of Stanford is #3 on my big board, but guards, even one as talented as DeCastro, never get picked in the top 10.

There might be a few surprises on here for those of you that look at other sites that cover the draft. The Lack of Dre Kirkpatrick in the top perhaps, or that I have Dont?a Hightower in the top 25. One thing that shouldn?t surprise anyone is the man in the #1 spot.

It will take me a few days to get all of this posted on here, once that is done, I?ll update all the position pages with the proper rankings.

The 12th Man Rising 2012 Big Board

2) Matt Kalil, OT, USC

3) David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

Facebook takes steps to address privacy concerns

(AP) ? Facebook has taken steps in recent days to address more worries about privacy, warning employers not to ask prospective employees for their passwords and trying to clarify its user “rights and responsibilities” policies.

But the latter effort backfired when tens of thousands of users, mostly in Germany, misunderstood the clarifications and blasted the company, even though nothing substantive had changed. Their discontent showed that, no matter what Facebook does, privacy concerns are still the biggest threat to users’ trust and to its growth.

“There is such an incredible level of scrutiny now about anything any company does about privacy,” said Jules Polonetsky, director of the Future of Privacy Forum, an industry-backed think tank in Washington. “We are treating every single thing that touches privacy as a five-alarm fire. The risk of all these five-alarm level outbursts is that people will become inured about privacy and miss real privacy issues because of crying wolf when nothing is actually going on.”

Users’ willingness to share information is a key part of Facebook’s business. The site makes the bulk of its money from ads that target users based on their personal information. Last year, the company earned a profit of $668 million and booked $3.7 billion of revenue, and it’s preparing for an initial public offering later this spring that could be valued at as much as $100 billion.

Privacy issues have dogged Facebook for years. It settled with the Federal Trade Commission in November over allegations that it misled users about the handling of their personal information. Google Inc., a big rival, agreed to a similar settlement eight months earlier.

The latest ruckus happened when more than 30,000 German users posted that they were rejecting the company’s proposed changes to its governing documents. But the changes amounted to nuanced revisions and clarifications of long-standing policies ? not a major overhaul.

The company, for instance, replaced the word “profile” with “timeline,” since Facebook users now have a different type of profile. Facebook also changed “hateful” to “hate speech” in its description of prohibited content.

Still, users who read the documents for the first time noticed some things that alarmed them. For example, the document replaced the words “privacy policy” with “data-use policy,” seemingly taking privacy out of the picture.

Facebook has been calling it a data-use policy since September, preferring to be more straightforward about its actual purpose. But the company makes so many subtle changes that it’s easy to lose track.

“It’s clear that some people fundamentally misunderstand our proposed changes. Our data-use policy governs how we use and collect data. That document is not changing at this time,” Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said. “That’s why we have this unique and transparent process, though ? so have an opportunity to clarify confusion and respond to user concerns. We look forward to doing so in the coming weeks.”

Another worrisome discovery might have been the fact that applications used by your Facebook friends can gain access to your data on Facebook, even if you do not use the apps yourself. That’s true, but it’s been true since at least 2007 and well-documented elsewhere on the site.

The attention focused on Facebook’s largely cosmetic changes reflect just how closely people watch the company.

“If they reposted the same privacy policy they had, everyone would be jumping up and down,” said Polonetsky, a former chief privacy officer at AOL.

Sarah Downey, senior privacy strategist at an online privacy software provider called Abine, was among those criticizing Facebook this week. She said the company is being more straightforward about its business model and what it does by clarifying its documents. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s heading in the right direction.

“What we once thought of as a social network has really become an advertising network,” she said.

On Friday, it was Facebook itself that raised alarms about privacy, warning employers not to ask job applicants for their passwords to the site so they can poke around on their profiles. The company threatened legal action against applications that violate its long-standing policy against sharing passwords.

The company action came after The Associated Press documented cases of job applicants who were asked, at the interview table, to reveal their Facebook passwords so their prospective employers can check their online profiles.

A Facebook executive cautioned that if an employer discovers that a job applicant is a member of a protected group, the employer may be vulnerable to claims of discrimination if it doesn’t hire that person.

“As a user, you shouldn’t be forced to share your private information and communications just to get a job,” Erin Egan, Facebook’s chief privacy officer of policy, wrote in a post. “And as the friend of a user, you shouldn’t have to worry that your private information or communications will be revealed to someone you don’t know and didn’t intend to share with just because that user is looking for a job.”

The post sparked comments from Facebook users, many of them thankful. But the number totaled only 108 ? a sign that when it comes to online privacy, it’s far easier to stir anger than gratitude.

Scandal-hit Olympus unveils new devices to rebuild firm

posted by luhecruba

in editorial

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s scandal-hit Olympus Corp on Wednesday unveiled three new medical products it hopes will help it out of the crisis left by a huge accounting fraud which erupted last year, threatening to destroy the 92-year-old firm.

Better known for its cameras, the company is pinning its future on medical equipment and in particular diagnostic endoscopes in which it already controls about 70 percent of the global market.

“Without growth in our medical business, I do not think there will be a revival for Olympus,” Hiroyuki Sasa, the firm’s president-nominee and head of Olympus’s medical equipment marketing business, said at an event for the product launch.

It has survived has the $1.7 billion fraud case that surfaced last October in one of Japan‘s worst corporate scandals, partly because its profitable medical business, which accounts for about 40 percent of total sales.

But the company has been unable to shake off criticism of its management, with foreign shareholders pressing their demands for an independent board.

Sasa, also an executive officer, was nominated by Olympus in February to become president and take over from Shuichi Takayama who has been sued by the firm for mismanagement.

Olympus also nominated a new board, including a former banker from its main lender Sumitomo Mitsui Banking as chairman.

But a group of foreign shareholders, who want a board free from the influence of the company’s creditors, demanded a more independent chairman.

“The proposed Chairman’s and certain other proposed board members’ close connection with Olympus’ main banks gives rise to a potential conflict of interest,” the shareholders, including Southeastern Asset Management and Indus Capital, said in an emailed statement.

“To accept a bank-led rehabilitation would be a setback, in our view, to the interests of shareholders, as well as to the earnest efforts of the Japanese Financial Services Agency and the Tokyo Stock Exchange to improve corporate governance standards in Japan.”

A regulatory filing showed last week that Southeastern had cut its stake in Olympus to 3.95 percent from 5.09 percent.

Foreign shareholders are worried that creditors could push Olympus into a big, dilutive sale of new equity, possibly to another Japanese company eager to gain some exposure to its profitable endoscope business.

Among firms rumored to be interested in making a strategic investment in Olympus are electronics firms Sony Corp and Panasonic Corp and rival endoscope maker Fujifilm Holdings Corp.

The nominees for Olympus’s new management team are subject to approval at the firm’s April 20 shareholders’ meeting.

REBUILDING WITH MEDICAL DEVICES

Olympus launched three new products – a gastrointestinal video endoscopy system, a low-cost endoscopic videoscope system and a blood vessel sealing and tissue cutting device, all aimed at overseas markets.

The release of EVIS EXERA III, the gastrointestinal video endoscopy system for overseas including United States, Europe and Asia but excluding Japan and Britain, came seven years after the previous generation product was launched.

For Britain and Japan, Olympus in 2006 released a similar but separate platform called EVIS LUCERA SPECTRUM and plans to launch a new generation product in the next fiscal year ending March 2013.

Olympus also released a low-cost endoscopic videoscope system, named Axeon, for emerging markets including China and India, as well as an energy-based surgical device, called Thunderbeat, the first product in the world that seals vessels and cuts tissues using both bipolar high frequency and ultrasonic energy.

The firm said aims to sell 5,000 to 7,000 EVIS EXERA III systems, which costs about 10 million yen ($119,600), a year, and 3,000 to 3,500 Axeon systems, which will be under 2.5 million yen.

It declined to reveal its sales target for Thunderbeat, whose system costs about $35,000 and handheld device around $850.

Olympus controls about 13 percent of the global energy-based surgical device market, lagging behind Covidien and Ethicon, a unit of Johnson & Johnson.

Olympus shares, which have lost nearly half their value since the scandal erupted, closed down 2.1 percent at 1,307 yen on Wednesday, against a 0.6 percent fall in the benchmark Nikkei average. ($1 = 83.6250 Japanese yen)

NH House to weigh gay marriage repeal vote

(AP Photo/Cheryl Senter, File)

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? New Hampshire lawmakers are considering whether to take the first step toward making their state legislature the first one to repeal a gay marriage law, even as the governor threatens a veto.

But regardless of the final outcome of the push to repeal the 2-year-old gay marriage law, both sides are pledging to continue fighting into the fall elections.

The bill, scheduled for a House vote on Wednesday, calls for repealing gay marriage in March 2013 and replacing it with a civil unions law that had been in place in 2008 and 2009. Gay marriages occurring before the repeal took effect would still be valid, but future gay unions would be civil unions. The bill also would allow voters could weigh in through a nonbinding November ballot question.

If the House passes the repeal measure, it would go to the Senate; both houses are controlled by Republicans. Democratic Gov. John Lynch has promised to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.

A two-thirds vote of the Legislature is required to override a veto. Opponents of a repeal have lobbied hard in the House in the hopes of achieving a narrower margin if the bill passes on Wednesday. The House would be the first chamber to take up an override vote if Lynch vetoes the bill, and if it failed to muster two-thirds, the measure would die.

Repeal opponents hope to solidify what they argue is public support for gay marriage, while supporters hope to reverse the law in a region of the country that gay rights groups have strength.

The National Organization for Marriage has pledged to spend $250,000 to help lawmakers running for re-election who support repealing the law. On the other side, the New Hampshire Republicans of Freedom and Equality PAC is raising money to back Republicans who vote to retain it.

If the law is repealed, a lawsuit is expected to be filed arguing New Hampshire’s law discriminates against gays who no longer can get married.

Democrats enacted both the civil unions and gay marriage laws when they controlled the Legislature, and Lynch signed both. After Republicans took control of the House and Senate in 2010, repeal legislative was introduced, but held over until this year.

The repeal legislation, sponsored by state Rep. David Bates, would ensure the 1,906 existing same-sex marriages would remain valid if the gay marriage law is repealed. Bates said it would replace the current “illegitimate definition” of marriage with one defining it as between one man and one woman.

Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maryland, Washington and the District of Columbia. New Jersey lawmakers recently passed a gay marriage bill, but the governor vetoed it. An override vote could come as late as January 2014.

Since 1998, 31 states have had ballot measures related to same-sex marriage, and opponents have prevailed in every state. Those states include Maine, where voters in 2009 rejected the state’s gay-marriage law.

Last month, a federal appeals court declared California’s same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional. The ruling could mean the bitterly contested, voter-approved law will be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
